American Express is a New York financial services company founded in 1850 as an express freight business that became a payments network and card issuer. Unlike the four-party networks it competes with, it issues most of its own cards and operates its own network, which lets it earn merchant discount revenue as well as interest and annual fees, and supports a premium rewards proposition built on travel and lounge access. Its business spans consumer and small business cards, corporate payments, merchant acquiring and travel services, and it is a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

This Treasury Manager role will have a primary focus on Asset Liability Management (ALM) at Amex Bank of Canada (Bank), including the ongoing development, maintenance and execution of the Bank’s ALM framework under Basel and OSFI requirements. The role will lead analysis and recommendations related to interest rate risk, earnings and economic value sensitivity, balance sheet optimization, assumptions, limits and stress testing. The role will also provide strategic oversight and program management support for the Bank’s capital management framework and priorities.

This role resides within the Global Treasury Legal Entity Management (LEM) group under the Global Treasury Organization. The LEM team is part of the Enterprise Balance Sheet Strategy Organization, which has enterprise-wide accountabilities for satisfying complex and evolving regulatory requirements and expectations. The LEM team is responsible for coordinating and supporting the delivery of treasury services for international legal entities, ensuring that corporate-wide treasury principles, strategies and policies are consistently applied across all legal entities while reflecting local environmental and governance requirements, regulations and business models.

This position reports to the Director, Global Treasury LEM, in Canada and will be responsible for:

  • Lead the ongoing development, maintenance and execution of the Bank’s ALM framework, ensuring alignment with Basel, OSFI and Enterprise Treasury requirements.
  • Own monthly and quarterly ALM analysis and reporting, including interest rate gap, net interest income (NII) sensitivity, Earnings-at-Risk (EAR), Economic Value Exposure (EVE), stress testing and management insights.
  • Translate balance sheet trends, market conditions and business plans into forward-looking ALM scenarios, risk assessments and recommendations to optimize earnings and economic value within risk appetite.
  • Lead the annual review and ongoing monitoring of ALM limits, behavioral assumptions, methodologies and related policies, with clear issue escalation and remediation tracking.
  • Provide effective challenge of ALM assumptions, data, methodologies and model or non-model tool outputs, and coordinate validation, documentation and remediation activities.
  • Recommend strategies to manage the Bank’s ALM exposures and optimize the balance sheet within established risk appetite, supported by clear management insights, recommendations and presentations for senior leadership and governance committees.
  • Provide strategic oversight and PMO coordination for the Bank’s capital management priorities, including the ICAAP, ensuring effective planning, governance, stakeholder alignment and delivery of key commitments.
  • Assess current and new products and business initiatives for impacts on ALM exposures, balance sheet profile, earnings sensitivity and capital requirements, and recommend appropriate risk mitigants.
  • Interpret regulatory guidance and manage the ongoing development and maintenance of effective Treasury frameworks, governance documentation and operating processes.
  • Represent the Treasury Department on capital- and ALM-related issues and projects in a consultative and advisory role.
  • Provide value-added support for OSFI and CDIC annual reviews, risk management oversight, internal and external corporate audits, other regulatory requirements, and compliance processes, including BCP, BIA, RCSA, and Risk and Control requirements.
  • Work closely with Global Treasury teams to support local requirements and AXP requirements.
  • Over time, the incumbent is expected to fully cross-train on other manager roles in the department, including support for funding, liquidity risk management and cash management activities.
  • Monitor industry information regarding best practices.
  • University degree / equivalent professional certification with 5+ years progressive Treasury experience in a regulated banking environment.
  • CFA or MBA preferred.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience in ALM and balance sheet risk management, including interest rate risk, NII and economic value sensitivity, stress testing, behavioral assumptions and limits; sound understanding of capital management, liquidity risk, cash management and regulatory reporting in a banking environment.
  • Strong knowledge of local and global economic and market environments and their effects on the economy and banking industry.
  • Strong understanding of banking products and their impact on the balance sheet and P&L.
  • Excellent project, program and process management skills, with demonstrated use of PMO disciplines such as integrated planning, milestone and dependency management, governance routines, risk and issue management, status reporting and delivery assurance across cross-functional and cross-border teams.
  • Knowledge of and experience in strong control and process management, including the design, implementation, documentation and execution of regulatory- and compliance-related processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills and ability to present complex topics and findings clearly and in a compelling manner to senior leadership.
  • Strong forecasting / analytical / modeling skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel is essential; experience in the use of AI and data visualization tools such as PowerBI, Tableau and Cornerstone would be considered an asset.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to draw conclusions and make recommendations in complex situations.
  • Able to think tactically and strategically.
  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment with minimal supervision.
  • Well-developed networking skills and a positive, committed attitude, with the ability to add value quickly in a dynamic environment.
