About the Team
The Clumio backend team designs, builds, and operates the cloud-native systems behind Clumio's data protection solutions - from the core SaaS platform to the systems that back up and recover large volumes of enterprise cloud data. In these environments backup is a compliance-, audit-, and security-driven requirement rather than a nice-to-have, so recovery performance, cost efficiency, and reliable operation at scale are our key differentiators.
Built on a fully cloud-native architecture, the platform scales dynamically with workload, delivers faster recovery and lower cost than native cloud backup, and stays correct under real-world failure conditions through reprocessing and retries. Beyond core backup and recovery, the team also builds customer onboarding, metering and billing, reporting, alerting, and ML-driven insights. We operate a mature, production-proven platform on AWS - including Amazon S3, DynamoDB, and the industry's first data protection solution for Apache Iceberg - and are actively expanding into multi-cloud data protection across GCP and Azure.
Role Overview
As a Principal Engineer on the Clumio backend team, you serve as a senior technical leader across the data protection platform. Reporting to the Engineering Director, this role combines deep hands-on engineering with broad architectural ownership, shaping systems that are foundational to customer trust and recovery guarantees.
You define and drive the long-term technical vision and cross-cutting initiatives that span multiple services and define core platform capabilities. This includes designing and evolving system abstractions, making high-impact architectural decisions that balance correctness, cost, scalability, performance, and operational simplicity, and leading the most complex and ambiguous technical initiatives from design through production rollout. You set technical direction and standards that ensure consistency across teams and systems, and you ensure those decisions are realized in high-quality production systems.
You remain deeply hands-on, spending significant time writing and reviewing code, solving complex technical problems, and participating in production operations. You work closely with Senior and Junior Engineers, Cloud Engineering, Quality Engineering, Product, and Customer Success to guide designs, mentor technical leaders, incorporate operational and customer feedback, and establish durable architectural patterns that allow the platform to scale and evolve across multiple cloud environments.
Basic Qualifications :
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant ownership of complex production systems.
- Experience leading ambiguous, high-impact technical initiatives from problem definition through production delivery.
- Ability to translate ambiguous business, customer, and operational needs into platform-wide technical strategy and system designs.
- Experience designing and evolving distributed or cloud-native systems with a focus on correctness, operability, and cost efficiency.
- Experience making high-impact architectural decisions and communicating trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Working knowledge of English.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Experience serving as the senior technical owner for a team or platform while remaining hands-on.
- Experience designing systems that span multiple services or cloud environments, including defining common abstractions and patterns.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Experience in data management, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, or related data protection domains.
- Experience with platform capabilities such as reporting, alerting, metering, billing, task orchestration, audit logging, policy management, or AI/ML.
- Experience designing secure systems, including authorization, encryption, and secure handling of sensitive data.
- Experience mentoring senior engineers and shaping technical direction in collaboration with engineering and product leadership.
