Quantum Physicist — NV Centres and Quantum Sensing

Location: Remote within Europe, with regular presence in Bremen

Direct Reports:  None; supervision of students possible

Working Model: Remote / hybrid. Regular time on-site in Bremen.

Mission

Build our capability in quantum sensing and magnetometry. The role covers NV-centre systems, optically pumped magnetometry and precision magnetic sensing, applying modelling and machine learning to improve characterisation and bring-up, and taking the results towards applied and commercial outcomes.

Responsibilities

Pillar 1 Sensing and Characterisation

• Model, calibrate and characterise NV-centre systems and magnetic-field sensors.
• Develop digital twins of sensing platforms and validate them against measurement.
• Apply machine learning to improve bring-up and characterisation time.

Success Metrics and KPIs: sensitivity and calibration-time improvements demonstrated on real systems.

Pillar 2 Applied and Commercial

• Explore applied sensing in biomagnetism and medical and industrial diagnostics.
• Work with Constructor's IP function where the work is patentable.
• Assess and develop spin-off and licensing pathways within the Constructor ecosystem.

Success Metrics and KPIs: invention disclosures, applied use cases validated.

Pillar 3 Research and Teaching

• Publish, and collaborate with Constructor University faculty and external sensing groups.
• Contribute to grant applications in quantum sensing.
• Co-supervise MSc projects and contribute to teaching-lab design.

Success Metrics and KPIs: publications, collaborations, student projects supervised.

Requirements

Experience

• PhD in physics, with experience in NV centres, optically pumped magnetometry or precision magnetic sensing.
• Pulse sequence development, spin physics, or zero-field NMR.
• Hands-on experimental work as well as modelling.
• Track record of publication.

Skills & Competencies

• Able to write the code you need.
• Interest in applied and commercial outcomes alongside the research.
• This is a capability we are building, not one you are joining.
• Clear scientific communication.

Education & Languages

• PhD in physics or a closely related field.
• Fluent English.
