Dyson is a technology company founded in 1991 by James Dyson after he built more than five thousand prototypes of a bagless vacuum cleaner that no established manufacturer would license. It applies high-speed digital motors and airflow engineering across vacuum cleaners, hair care products including the Supersonic and Airwrap, air purifiers, lighting and headphones, and sells almost entirely direct to consumers at premium prices. The company moved its head office from Wiltshire to Singapore in 2019 to sit closer to its Asian manufacturing and markets, remains privately held by the Dyson family, and funds an engineering university at its Malmesbury campus.

About us

At Dyson, we are encouraged to think differently, challenge convention and be unafraid to make mistakes. We are creative, collaborative, practical and enthusiastic, but most of all, we’re hugely passionate about what we do.

About the role

We are seeking a highly experienced and visionary Principal Engineer - Advanced Control System (ACS) to lead the design, development, and deployment of advanced control systems across our platform.

This pivotal technical leadership role will drive innovation, ensure technical excellence, and shape the strategic direction of control system architectures for complex platforms and applications.

Working closely with software, hardware, systems, and product engineering teams, you will define control strategies, algorithms, and system models, and integrate high-performance control solutions that optimise performance, reliability, and scalability.

This role is ideal for a technical leader with deep expertise in control theory, system modelling, and real-time implementation, supported by a strong track record of delivering complex, high-performance systems.

What You'll Be Responsible For:

Lead Control System Architecture and Development

  • Lead the architecture and development of advanced control systems for complex platforms and applications.
  • Shape the strategic direction of control system architectures and ensure technical excellence across the platform.

Define Control Strategies, Algorithms and System Models

  • Define control strategies, algorithms, and system models to optimise performance, reliability, and scalability.
  • Lead the development and real-time implementation of control solutions in embedded or distributed environments.

Drive Technical Reviews, Validation and Verification

  • Drive technical reviews, validation, and verification of control systems to meet safety and regulatory standards.
  • Develop and maintain system specifications, design reports, and test plans.

Technical Leadership and Innovation

  • Mentor and guide engineering teams in control system design, modelling, and simulation.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and methodologies to enhance system capabilities and performance.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with software, hardware, systems, and product engineering teams to integrate control solutions.
  • Represent the company in technical forums, conferences, and industry collaborations.

About you

What You'll Bring

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Control Systems, Robotics, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in control system design and implementation, with at least 3 years in a technical leadership role.
  • Proven ability to architect and deliver complex, high-performance control systems in embedded or distributed environments.
  • Strong proficiency in classical and modern control theory, system identification, and optimisation techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, and real-time operating systems.
  • Experience with model-based design, digital twin technologies, and AI-enhanced control systems is a plus.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and compliance requirements, such as ISO 26262, DO-178C, and IEC 61508, is desirable.

Leadership Attributes

We are looking for a leader who:

  • Mentors and guides engineers in control system design, modelling, and simulation.
  • Balances technical depth with strategic thinking.
  • Demonstrates excellent problem-solving skills when addressing complex control system challenges.
  • Communicates effectively and collaborates across software, hardware, systems, and product engineering teams.
  • Builds a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Has the courage to challenge the status quo and drive innovation.

Why Join Us?

  • Shape the strategic direction of advanced control system architectures across our platform.
  • Influence technology strategy and product architecture at a global level.
  • Work on advanced control theory, system modelling, and real-time implementation for complex applications.
  • Develop engineering capability through technical mentorship and industry collaboration.
  • Drive innovation that directly impacts millions of customers worldwide.
