About the Team

You’ll join a team where people work with integrity, inclusion, innovation, agility, collaboration and commitment. In practice, that means sharing ownership, solving complex problems together and staying connected to the customer context, the purpose behind the work and how each role contributes to meaningful outcomes.

We deliver secure, resilient and innovative technology services that enable Defence enterprise and warfighting capabilities across multiple classified domains and networks. We provide world-class ICT operations and agile digital modernisation using advanced analytics, automation, hybrid cloud, DevSecOps, Infrastructure as Code, cybersecurity and AI to optimise highly complex, mission-critical environments.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Middleware Engineer to implement, manage and optimise enterprise middleware platforms that enable reliable integration and communication between applications, databases, services and external systems.

This role provides senior technical expertise across middleware infrastructure, application integration, APIs, messaging, web services, automation, security, performance and high availability. Working closely with application developers, integration engineers, database teams, infrastructure teams, architects, cybersecurity and business stakeholders, you will help deliver secure, resilient and scalable middleware services that support critical business outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement, configure, maintain and optimise enterprise middleware platforms, including application servers, integration platforms, API gateways, messaging technologies and related services.

  • Design, support and improve secure application integration solutions using APIs, web services, messaging platforms, event-driven architectures and service interfaces.

  • Lead complex troubleshooting, root cause analysis, performance tuning, upgrades, migrations, disaster recovery activities and platform modernisation initiatives.

  • Develop and maintain automation, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring solutions, operational processes and infrastructure-as-code practices to improve service reliability and efficiency.

  • Partner with application, infrastructure, architecture, cybersecurity and business teams to deliver integration outcomes, provide technical leadership and mentor engineers in middleware best practices.

About You

We are looking for someone who brings judgement, curiosity and a collaborative approach to work that matters.

Skills & Experience

  • Significant experience in middleware engineering, integration engineering, application infrastructure or a related discipline, with strong knowledge of enterprise middleware platforms such as Oracle WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, JBoss/WildFly, Tomcat or equivalent.

  • Demonstrated experience with APIs, REST, SOAP, XML, JSON, web services, messaging technologies and integration patterns, including platforms such as IBM MQ, Kafka, RabbitMQ or ActiveMQ.

  • Strong knowledge of Linux/Unix environments, networking concepts, security controls, troubleshooting, performance management, monitoring, automation and operational support.

  • Experience supporting cloud or hybrid environments, container technologies, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines and DevOps or DevSecOps practices.

  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, technical leadership and communication skills, with the ability to lead investigations, mentor engineers and communicate technical risks and recommendations effectively.

This role requires the successful applicant to be an Australian citizen and hold, or be eligible to obtain, NV-1 security clearance.

If this role interests you, we encourage you to apply. We value different experiences and are interested in the capability and potential you could bring.
