Purpose:

We are seeking a Research Fellow to support research and development in grid-forming converters, power electronics, and advanced energy systems. The role involves the design, modelling, control, implementation, and experimental validation of grid-forming power electronic converters for applications including renewable energy integration, energy storage, microgrids, and smart grid systems. The Research Fellow will independently undertake research activities, contribute to project planning and execution, support research proposal development, and disseminate research outcomes through high-quality publications, technical reports, and presentations. The candidate will also work closely with PI, graduate students, research staff, and industry partners

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and development in grid-forming power electronic converters, advanced converter control, and energy systems.

  • Design, model, simulate, implement, and experimentally validate power electronic converter systems and associated control algorithms.

  • Develop and evaluate advanced control strategies for grid-forming converters and converter-dominated power systems.

  • Perform experimental testing, data analysis, and performance evaluation of power electronic converter systems.

  • Develop simulation models using MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, PSCAD, or equivalent tools.

  • Design, integrate, commission, and test laboratory-scale power electronic converter prototypes and experimental platforms.

  • Independently analyze research problems, formulate technical solutions, and contribute to the development of new research ideas.

  • Contribute to research proposal preparation, including literature review, technical formulation, proposal writing, and development of project concepts.

  • Prepare technical reports, research documentation, and high-quality publications for journals and conferences.

  • Present research findings at project meetings, conferences, workshops, and other technical forums where appropriate.

  • Collaborate with PI, graduate students, research staff, and industry partners in the execution of research projects.

  • Support the supervision and mentoring of graduate students, undergraduate students, and junior research staff, where required.

  • Support project coordination, milestone tracking, deliverables, and technical communication with project partners.

  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety requirements and good practices in the use and maintenance of research equipment.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Power Systems, or a closely related discipline.

  • Strong research background in power electronics, power converter design, converter control, and/or grid-connected power electronic systems.

  • Strong knowledge of grid-forming converters, renewable energy systems, energy storage systems, microgrids, or converter-dominated power systems is preferred.

  • Experience with simulation and modelling tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, PSCAD, or equivalent software.

  • Hands-on experience in power electronics hardware design, prototyping, laboratory implementation, testing, and experimental validation is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated research capability through relevant journal/conference publications or equivalent research outputs.

  • Experience in research proposal preparation, technical grant writing, or industry-sponsored research projects would be advantageous.

Competencies:

  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to conduct research independently and develop technical solutions to complex engineering problems.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.

  • Good technical writing, presentation, and communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple research activities, project milestones, and deadlines.

  • Ability to mentor and support graduate students and junior researchers where required.

  • Strong interest in power electronics, renewable energy systems, and sustainable energy technologies.
