Job Description:

This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week) Cataloging Assistant position for the Cataloging Unit of the Research & Discovery Division within the Valley Library at Oregon State University (OSU).

Position Duties

In this position you will:

  • Assist cataloging and other staff to correctly process and distribute print materials to appropriate destinations. (Teamwork; Critical Thinking; Communication)

  • Partner with cataloging staff to check in and process government documents. (Teamwork; Communication)

  • Acquire and apply knowledge of Library of Congress classification and library layout to retrieve materials from the shelves. (Critical Thinking; Communication)

As skills develop over time, you will:

  • Collaborate with cataloging staff to complete assorted inventory projects involving spreadsheets, databases, and physical materials. (Teamwork; Communication; Critical Thinking; Technology)

  • Acquire and apply knowledge of online library catalogs and databases to locate and record data from bibliographic records in OCLC and OSULP’s catalog. (Technology)

  • Identify and evaluate online library catalog and database issues in order to repair errors, retrieve data, and improve patron access to library resources (Critical Thinking; Technology)

  • Support OSULP employees on process improvements or additional projects. (Teamwork; Communication; Critical Thinking)

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study

  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment

  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard

    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program

    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term

    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*

    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term

    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by theOffice of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

  • Availability to work the full academic year as well as Summer term.

Working Conditions/Schedule:

• Work schedule is during regular business hours (M-F, 8-5).
  • Must be able to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.

• Must be able to push a cart weighing up to 100 lbs., stand for up to 3 hours at a time, sit for up to 3 hours at a time, reach overhead and bend down for materials on shelves.
