Help Shape the Future of Britain's Railway

Rail Delivery Group (RDG) partners with Britain’s train operators to put customers at the heart of everything we do, delivering essential services and dedicated experts who keep the nation’s railway running efficiently.

From journey information, reservations and Railcards to improving performance, safety and accessibility, we drive the services and people that keep the railway moving. Anyone who has travelled by train or booked a journey for friends or family, will have used our services. We are integral to the running of the railway and play a crucial part at every stage of the customer journey - making sure we are delivering a better railway for all our customers, now and in the future.

As we embark on a new era for rail, we are now looking for a Senior Data Analyst to join us. If you are motivated by meaningful work and want to play a role in the future of Britain's railway, we'd love to hear from you!

What is the purpose of this job?

The Data Analysis & Insights team is responsible for delivering trusted insight, performance reporting and analytical products that support Rail Delivery Group and the wider rail industry.

As Senior Data Analyst, you will play a leading role in delivering high-quality analysis, business intelligence and decision support across a diverse portfolio of programmes and strategic initiatives. Working with stakeholders across RDG and the wider industry, you will turn complex data into actionable insight that helps shape decisions, improve performance and deliver measurable business value.

Alongside hands-on analytical delivery, you will help drive the evolution of RDG's Business Intelligence capability, partnering with the Principal Analytics Lead to shape the roadmap, governance, standards and adoption of Power BI across the organisation. You'll play a key role in embedding self-service analytics, establishing robust semantic models and supporting the evolution of our wider analytics platform and ways of working.

What can I expect to do in this job?

No two days are quite the same, but some of the things you will be involved in include:

· Be accountable for the day-to-day development and continuous improvement of RDG's Business Intelligence capability, ensuring analytical products meet organisational needs and deliver measurable value.

· Lead the development of RDG's Power BI capability, shaping its roadmap, governance, standards, operating model and adoption across the organisation, while promoting best practice and ensuring trusted, well-managed analytical products.

· Provide analytical support across RDG programmes and projects, applying data and evidence to support decision-making, business case development, performance monitoring, benefits realisation and industry assurance activities.

· Champion the adoption of Power BI across RDG through training, coaching, guidance and the development of best practice, helping build organisational capability and confidence in self-service analytics.

· Produce semantic models, self-service dashboards and analytical products that enable stakeholders to explore and draw conclusions from trusted data, applying strong analytical, data-modelling and visualisation practices.

· Independently identify and deliver transformation initiatives that reduce manual workload, improve productivity and increase the value derived from data across RDG.

· Manage and develop two direct reports and a part-time contractor, including workload prioritisation, performance management, coaching and capability development.

· Proactively present recommendations, analysis and evidence-based insights to internal colleagues, industry partners and external stakeholders to support informed decision-making.

Requirements

We are less interested in ticking every box and more interested in finding someone who can make a positive contribution to our team.

You'll likely bring:

Essential

· Proven experience delivering analytical projects that support business performance and decision-making.

· Strong experience developing and governing Power BI reporting environments, including dashboards, reports and self-service analytics capabilities.

· Strong experience designing semantic models and reusable data products that support consistent reporting and trusted organisational metrics.

· Strong SQL and data analysis skills, with experience working with complex datasets.

· Experience translating business requirements into practical reporting and analytical solutions.

· Ability to communicate complex findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.

· Experience engaging with stakeholders and building effective working relationships.

· Demonstrable experience identifying opportunities for improvement, automation and transformation through data.

· Experience of line managing analysts, including coaching, workload prioritisation, performance management and capability development.

· Experience working with senior stakeholders, external suppliers, partners or industry bodies to deliver analytical outcomes.

Desirable

  • Experience working with notebook-based analytics, data modelling or modern cloud data platforms, ideally within an AWS environment.
  • Experience supporting reporting migrations, including the transition of reporting content between platforms such as Tableau and Power BI, or wider analytics transformation programmes.
  • Experience working in regulated, operational or infrastructure-focused industries.
  • Interest in emerging analytics technologies and willingness to learn new tools and ways of working within a cloud-based analytics environment.
