Please note: We are not able to consider candidates who are not living and working in the Netherlands. At this moment we are not providing relocation sponsorships.

At Schuberg Philis, we specialize in mission-critical IT. We work side-by-side with our customers to ensure their most critical digital services remain reliable, secure, and continuously available.

Our engineers are T-shaped professionals: people with deep expertise, broad technical understanding, and a strong sense of ownership. Within our dedicated, multidisciplinary, and self-managing customer teams, we take responsibility for complex technology environments and long-term customer success.

For our team in Best, we are looking for an experienced Linux / Kubernetes Engineer with a strong background in open-source infrastructure, virtualisation, and Kubernetes.

This is not a cloud-first engineering position. We are looking for someone who understands infrastructure from the ground up. Someone who is comfortable working with Linux, virtualisation, Kubernetes, and the networking concepts that connect these layers.

The role

As a Linux / Kubernetes Engineer, you will design, build, operate, and improve platforms that support mission-critical customer environments.

You will work across the infrastructure stack, from Linux and virtualisation through to Kubernetes. Rather than simply consuming an existing managed Kubernetes service, you understand the underlying infrastructure and are comfortable investigating problems across multiple layers of the platform.

Your experience does not need to match every technology in our stack. What matters more is that you have strong fundamentals in Linux, virtualisation, and Kubernetes and can apply that knowledge to different infrastructure environments.

At Schuberg Philis, engineers work directly with customers and take ownership of the environments they are responsible for. We therefore look for someone who is comfortable speaking up, challenging technical decisions, involving stakeholders, and taking the initiative when something needs to move forward.

What you will do

Your responsibilities may vary depending on the customer environment, but typically include:

  • Design, build, operate, and improve Kubernetes-based infrastructure and platforms.
  • Work extensively with Linux and open-source technologies.
  • Build and maintain infrastructure across virtualised and Kubernetes environments.
  • Work with technologies such as Rancher, Harvester, VMware, and related infrastructure platforms.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues across Linux, virtualisation, Kubernetes, and networking.
  • Improve the reliability, scalability, and maintainability of infrastructure platforms.
  • Contribute to infrastructure automation and self-service capabilities for development teams.
  • Collaborate with network engineers and other infrastructure specialists on platform connectivity and architecture.
  • Work directly with customer stakeholders to understand technical challenges and translate them into practical solutions.
  • Take ownership of technical problems instead of waiting for someone else to drive them.
  • Challenge existing solutions and requirements where you see opportunities to improve them.
  • Share your knowledge and help strengthen Kubernetes and open-source engineering capabilities across Schuberg Philis.

What you bring

We are looking for an engineer who understands Kubernetes as part of a wider infrastructure landscape, rather than Kubernetes as an isolated technology.

You are comfortable moving between the operating system, virtualisation layer, Kubernetes platform, and networking when investigating or designing infrastructure.

You likely bring:

  • Strong hands-on experience with Linux and open-source infrastructure.
  • Strong practical knowledge of Kubernetes.
  • Experience building, operating, or troubleshooting Kubernetes environments rather than only consuming managed Kubernetes services.
  • Solid knowledge of virtualisation technologies and concepts.
  • A good understanding of infrastructure and networking fundamentals.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex infrastructure issues across multiple technology layers.
  • An automation mindset and the desire to remove repetitive manual work wherever possible.
  • A strong sense of ownership and the ability to work independently.
  • The confidence to challenge technical decisions constructively.
  • The ability to work directly with customers and translate technical complexity into understandable choices.
  • A collaborative mindset and willingness to share knowledge with engineers from different disciplines.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.

Nice to have

  • Rancher and virtualisation experience.
  • Infrastructure automation.
  • Hybrid/cloud experience.

Why this role?

This is an opportunity for an engineer who enjoys understanding infrastructure all the way down the stack.

While many Kubernetes roles today primarily revolve around managed cloud services, this position gives you the opportunity to work much closer to the underlying infrastructure. You'll combine Linux, virtualisation, Kubernetes, networking, and automation to solve complex engineering challenges.

You'll work in environments where reliability matters and where you have the autonomy to influence how platforms are designed and operated.

At the same time, you won't be limited to a single technology or customer environment. We value engineers who can take their expertise and apply it across different technical landscapes.

Just as importantly, this is a role where technical ownership matters.

We don't expect engineers to simply execute tickets or requirements. You'll be encouraged to ask questions, challenge assumptions, initiate conversations with customers, and propose better solutions. If you believe architecture, requirement, or way of working can be improved, we expect you to bring that perspective to the table.

What can you expect?

At Schuberg Philis, we invest heavily in our people. You'll work in an environment built around trust, autonomy, engineering craftsmanship, and long-term customer relationships.

You'll have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge across Kubernetes, Linux, virtualisation, networking, automation, and other areas of infrastructure engineering while working alongside specialists from different technical disciplines.

Most importantly, you'll join an engineering environment where you are trusted to take responsibility. You'll have the freedom to investigate, challenge, improve, and make decisions that directly influence the resilience and quality of mission-critical platforms.

Interested?

If you enjoy working deep in Linux, Kubernetes, virtualisation, and open-source infrastructure, while taking ownership beyond the technology itself, we would love to hear from you.

Everyone we work with and consider working with has a right to equal treatment. The hiring and appraisal process at Schuberg Philis is designed to be thorough and equitable, implementing fair payment, benefits, and opportunities across all demographics.

It is our desire to be a company that brings together multiple nationalities, cultures, religions, genders, abilities, and talents within and across our teams. We welcome colleagues from diverse backgrounds to join Schuberg Philis and actively support diversity and inclusion in the tech industry.
