A Snapshot of Your Day

As an Aerothermal CFD Engineer, you will support the design and development of cooling systems for critical gas turbine components, including turbine blades, vanes and casings. Your work will help ensure components can operate reliably in the high-temperature environment inside a gas turbine, while meeting performance and service life requirements.

Based within the Turbine Engineering function in Lincoln, you will work closely with Mechanical Design and Mechanical Integrity colleagues to understand how cooling design, material behaviour and mechanical loading affect component life. You will use analysis, test data and fleet experience to improve existing products and support new turbine developments.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Analyse and develop cooling designs for turbine blades, vanes and casings, supporting new products and upgrades to existing gas turbine components.
  • Work with Mechanical Design and Mechanical Integrity teams to establish component life, including duty-based lifing, and understand the relationship between cooling, stress, creep and material behavior.
  • Use root cause analysis, weighted decision analysis and design of experiments to investigate technical issues and support robust design decisions.
  • Define component and engine test requirements, process component and engine test readings, and calibrate thermal models using test results and operational fleet experience.
  • Apply appropriate analysis methods, including finite element methods and computational fluid dynamics, to assess heat transfer and fluid flow behaviour.
  • Produce technical reports, presentations and method documentation, while contributing to tool-chain integration, code validation, delivery improvements and performance reporting against technical and schedule objectives.

What You Bring

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree with significant heat transfer or cooling design content, ideally gained through automotive, aerospace or turbomachinery engineering.
  • At least five years’ relevant engineering experience in heat transfer, cooling design or thermal analysis for complex mechanical systems.
  • A strong understanding of heat transfer theory, with the ability to complete detailed investigations accurately and validate results using simplified one-dimensional methods and hand calculations.
  • Knowledge of gas turbine component cooling, materials science, investment casting manufacture, secondary air systems, stress and creep mechanisms.
  • Experience applying finite element methods and/or computational fluid dynamics to fluid flow and heat transfer problems.
  • Experience with relevant tools such as Patran, P-Thermal, RR SC03, ANSYS, Abaqus, STAR-CCM+, CFX or Fluent would be advantageous, alongside the ability to work effectively both independently and within multidisciplinary teams.

About the Team

Our Gas Services division offers low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. We bring together gas turbines, steam turbines, generators and digital service solutions under one roof. Through modernization, digitalization and innovative service offerings, we support customers worldwide in improving reliability, efficiency and sustainability.

You will join the Turbine Engineering function in Lincoln, where engineers work across design, mechanical integrity, materials and testing to improve the performance and durability of gas turbine components. The team uses engineering analysis, test evidence and operational fleet knowledge to develop cooling solutions that protect turbine parts in demanding high-temperature service.
