Smiths Group is a British engineering company founded in 1851 as a London watchmaker, and it has repeatedly reinvented itself, once supplying instruments for most British cars and aircraft before selling those businesses entirely. Today it operates in four areas: security screening equipment for airports and borders, seals and connectors for extreme industrial environments, non-destructive detection and inspection instruments, and specialist electrical connectors for aerospace and defence. Headquartered in London and listed there, it has been under investor pressure to break itself up on the argument that its divisions have little in common.

Every minute of every day, Smiths Detection’s threat detection and security screening technology helps to protect people and infrastructure, making the world a safer place.

Smiths Detection, part of Smiths Group is a global leader in the development, manufacture and management of security and detection solutions designed to make the world a safer place. Our technology provides threat detection and screening solutions for customers in our key markets: aviation, ports and borders, defence, and urban security.

Our expertise spans 21 global offices, seven manufacturing sites and five R&D centres, with a global network of 3,000 dedicated colleagues contributing towards over 40 years at the frontline of advances in safety and security.

This results in careers built on variety and the opportunity to work on a range of state-of-the-art solutions, where you can develop your knowledge and experience every day.

Job Opportunity

We are looking for a hands-on and driven Manufacturing Product Engineer to join our advanced manufacturing operation supporting the production of complex electromechanical systems and high-precision box-build assemblies.

This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer who thrives in a High-Mix, Low-to-Medium Volume (HMLV) manufacturing environment and enjoys solving complex production challenges. You will play a key role in supporting production, driving process improvements, troubleshooting manufacturing issues, and ensuring products are built to the highest quality standards.

Working closely with Production, Quality, Supply Chain, and global engineering teams, you will contribute to New Product Introduction (NPI), product transfers, continuous improvement initiatives, and operational excellence across the manufacturing lifecycle.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Provide hands-on engineering support for complex box-build and electromechanical manufacturing operations.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, identify root causes, and implement robust corrective and preventive actions.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity, quality, efficiency, and manufacturing performance.
  • Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities, including product builds, trials, manufacturing readiness assessments, and process optimization.
  • Lead and support product transfer projects, including production line setup, equipment installation, workflow planning, and production readiness activities.
  • Conduct process analysis, TAKT time studies, in-process quality audits, and manufacturing performance reviews.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve manufacturing documentation including SOPs, PFMEAs, work instructions, build books, and engineering change records.
  • Support quality investigations, CAPA activities, supplier quality issues, and customer complaints.
  • Coordinate Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), product inspections, and validation activities.
  • Analyze manufacturing and quality data using tools such as Excel and Power BI to drive informed decision-making.
  • Collaborate with global teams, manufacturing operations, quality, and supply chain stakeholders to resolve technical challenges and improve operational performance.
  • Drive Lean Manufacturing, DFM/DFT, process validation, and manufacturing optimization initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, regulatory, and engineering standards across all manufacturing activities.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience within a manufacturing engineering, product engineering, or process engineering environment.
  • Strong experience in High-Mix, Low-to-Medium Volume (HMLV) manufacturing environments.
  • Hands-on experience supporting box-build, electromechanical assembly, or complex equipment manufacturing.
  • Proven troubleshooting and root cause analysis capability within a production environment.
  • Experience supporting production lines, equipment setup, manufacturing process improvements, and engineering change implementation.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing documentation including SOPs, PFMEAs, ECNs, Work Instructions, and Quality Systems.
  • Experience with New Product Introduction (NPI), product launches, or product transfer activities.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, continuous improvement, DFM, DFT, and process validation principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to utilize data to drive decisions and improvements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, ERP/MRP systems, and manufacturing data analysis tools.
  • Effective communication skills with experience working across Production, Quality, Supply Chain, and Engineering teams.
  • Self-motivated, hands-on, and comfortable working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Nice to Have

  • Experience manufacturing capital equipment, industrial systems, X-ray systems, medical devices, instrumentation, or other complex electromechanical products.
  • Knowledge of Power BI and manufacturing performance dashboards.
  • Experience leading product transfer or manufacturing localization projects.
  • Exposure to supplier quality management, CAPA investigations, and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
  • Understanding of ISO-regulated manufacturing environments and quality management systems.
  • Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or Continuous Improvement certification.
  • Experience collaborating with international teams and global engineering stakeholders.
