Senior Software Engineer – North America

Job Summary

The Senior Software Engineer (North America) is responsible for designing, developing, and supporting secure and reliable fintech and payment solutions for the North America portfolio. The role requires strong hands-on engineering skills, technical leadership, and the ability to mentor junior engineers while working closely with North America customers, partners, and internal stakeholders.The role primarily follows Malaysia working hours, with occasional after-hours support or calls required to accommodate North America stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

1. Software Engineering & Technical Delivery

• Architect, develop, enhance, and maintain secure, scalable, reliable, and high-performance backend services for fintech and payment applications.
• Take ownership of complex engineering work across requirements analysis, solution design, development, testing, deployment, troubleshooting, and production support.
• Contribute to technical and architectural discussions and ensure implementation align with agreed architecture, coding standards, secure development practices, and SDLC requirements.
• Conduct code reviews, analyse technical issues, and support root-cause analysis and resolution of backend, API, database, integration, performance, and production issues.
• Support complex technical escalations and escalate matters requiring broader architectural, customer, or management decisions to the Lead Engineer or Engineering Manager.
• Ensure solutions meet required standards for performance, scalability, reliability, maintainability, security, and compliance.
• Identify and recommend improvements to engineering practices, tooling, testing, automation, system performance, and development efficiency.

2. North America Portfolio & Stakeholder Support

• Act as a key technical contributor supporting North America projects, customers, and partners.
• Support technical implementation, system integration, troubleshooting, production issues, and ongoing engineering requirements for the North America portfolio.
• Participate in technical discussions with North America customers, partners, and their IT or security teams when required.
• Collaborate with Product, Project Management, QA, Infrastructure, Information Security, and business stakeholders to support successful delivery for the North America market.
• Proactively identify and communicate technical risks, dependencies, implementation constraints, delivery concerns, and customer-impacting issues.
• Ensure assigned solutions remain aligned with global product, architecture, engineering, security, and compliance standards.

3. Technical Mentoring & Knowledge Sharing

• Provide hands-on technical leadership and guidance to junior and less experienced engineers during solution design, development, implementation, troubleshooting, and technical problem-solving.
• Lead technical delivery when required while remaining actively involved in development, code reviews, troubleshooting, and production support.
• Conduct code reviews, knowledge-sharing sessions, and practical technical coaching.
• Lead by example in technical ownership, engineering discipline, collaboration, accountability, and quality.

4. Cross-Time-Zone Collaboration

• Collaborate effectively with colleagues, customers, partners, and stakeholders across Malaysia and North America.
• Work primarily according to Malaysia working hours, with flexibility to participate in occasional technical discussions, customer calls, implementation activities, or critical operational support outside normal working hours when required to support North America stakeholders.
• Maintain clear documentation and effective handover of technical issues, customer requirements, implementation status, decisions, and outstanding actions across time zones.

Must-Have

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
• Minimum 6 years of professional software development experience.
• Strong hands-on backend development experience using Java, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, SQL, and relational databases.
• Strong experience across the full software development lifecycle, including design, development, testing, deployment, troubleshooting, and production support.
• Proven ability to provide technical leadership while remaining hands-on, including guiding engineers and supporting junior team members.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including root-cause analysis and practical issue resolution.
• Strong stakeholder communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including customers and partners.
• Strong understanding of software design, maintainability, scalability, reliability, performance, and security.
• Experience with Git, CI/CD, automated testing, debugging, peer review, and SDLC practices.
• Strong SQL and relational database skills, with experience in databases such as MySQL, MariaDB, MSSQL, or PostgreSQL.
• Good understanding of ORM frameworks such as Hibernate.
• Ability to work effectively across different time zones and accommodate occasional North America-related calls or support outside normal Malaysia working hours.

• Experience in fintech, payments, banking technology, or regulated technology environments.
• Experience supporting North America or other international customers.
• Experience working in a follow-the-sun delivery or support model.
• Experience supporting customer implementations or geographically distributed teams.
• Experience participating in customer-facing technical, integration, IT, or security discussions.
• Familiarity with secure coding and payment/security standards such as OWASP, PCI DSS, MPoC, and SPoC.
• Relevant certifications in Java, cloud technology, secure coding, software engineering, or related areas.
• Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for integration or troubleshooting.
• Exposure to mobile or terminal payment solutions.
• Experience supporting pre-sales technical discussions.
• Exposure to Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, GCP, Azure, Kafka, RabbitMQ, message queues, or event-driven architecture.
