Senior Frontend Engineer

Our team is excited to find our next Senior Frontend Engineer to join the company.

As a Senior Frontend Engineer at Virtualitics, you will own the frontend of our next-generation application platform: the shared app shell, component library, hooks, and typed API client that every customer project team builds their product on. You will design the component APIs other engineers reach for first, decide how the platform handles auth, layout, theming, data fetching, and real-time updates, and keep all of it fast, accessible, and secure enough for defense networks. You will work alongside backend, AI, and DevSecOps engineers, and with the project teams shipping to defense and government customers. This is a chance to shape how a platform looks and behaves before it hardens, and to see your work in front of analysts and decision-makers within weeks.

Our frontend is React and TypeScript, built with modern tooling and shipped as versioned packages that project teams build on. We use Material UI alongside an in-house design system, and most of what we build is data-heavy: large tables, interactive charts, dashboards, and streaming, chat-driven experiences. Everything ships in containers to secure government environments.

Responsibilities

• Own and evolve the shared frontend packages (app shell, component library, hooks, typed API client) that project teams build on, treating their public APIs as contracts with versioning and clear migration paths.

• Design and build reusable, config-driven components for data-heavy government applications: server-paginated tables, theme-aware charts, dashboards, forms, and chat and generative-UI surfaces driven by streaming events.

• Set the frontend testing strategy and build it out: component tests, integration tests against the real API, and end-to-end coverage for the flows that matter.

• Own frontend performance and bundle discipline: budgets, code splitting, render profiling, and keeping heavy dependencies (charting, grids, web components) from bloating every project app.

• Drive design-system direction: decide where Material UI ends and our in-house component library begins, and make that decision consistent across apps.

• Treat accessibility (Section 508 / WCAG 2.1 AA) and classification-aware UI (banners, markings) as first-class requirements.

• Partner with backend engineers on API shape, auth and session behavior, real-time event contracts, and the security posture of the browser surface (CSP, cookies, dependency hygiene).

• Support project teams adopting the platform: review their frontend code, unblock them, and pull recurring patterns back into the shared packages.

• Help plan and execute the migration of our existing product frontend onto the new platform without pausing feature delivery.

• Mentor engineers and raise the standard for frontend work across the company.

Skills & Qualifications

• S in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.

• 6+ years building production web applications with deep expertise in React and TypeScript.

• Experience owning a shared component library, design system, or frontend platform consumed by other teams, including package publishing, versioning, and breaking-change management.

• Strong grasp of modern React: hooks, Suspense, concurrent rendering, server-state libraries (TanStack Query or similar), and judgment about when client state (Zustand, Redux, or similar) is warranted.

• Fluency with the build and tooling layer: Vite, pnpm workspaces, ESLint, TypeScript project configuration, and CI for frontend packages.

• Experience shipping frontend tests that catch real regressions (Vitest or Jest with Testing Library, Playwright or Cypress).

• Experience building data-dense UIs: large tables with server-side pagination, interactive charts, dashboards.

• Working knowledge of browser security: session cookies, CSP, XSS, CSRF, and dependency supply chain.

• Clear written communication. Much of this role is design docs, code review, and documentation that other teams rely on.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Web Components / Lit and integrating them into React.

• Experience with Material UI theming at scale, or building a theming system shared across multiple applications.

• Experience with streaming UIs (Server-Sent Events, WebSockets) or generative / LLM-driven interfaces.

• Experience with data visualization libraries (Plotly, D3, ECharts) and graph or flow editors (React Flow).

• Experience shipping software into DoD or other regulated environments (Platform One, GovCloud, air-gapped networks), and familiarity with Section 508 audits.

• Knowledge of NIST 800-53, NIST 800-171, and CMMC 2.0 as they affect frontend and browser security.

• Experience migrating a legacy frontend onto a new platform while the product keeps shipping.

• Startup experience on a growing team, and a desire to mentor more junior engineers.
