Wise is a British financial technology company founded in 2011 by two Estonians who were frustrated by the cost of moving money between pounds and euros. It built a network of local bank accounts in each market so that most transfers never cross a border, publishes the mid-market exchange rate with an explicit fee, and has extended the model into multi-currency accounts, debit cards, business payments and an infrastructure product that banks resell. The company listed directly on the London Stock Exchange in 2021 and moves tens of billions of pounds for millions of personal and business customers each quarter.

Wise is a global technology company, building the best way to move and manage the world’s money.

Min fees. Max ease. Full speed.

Whether people and businesses are sending money to another country, spending abroad, or making and receiving international payments, Wise is on a mission to make their lives easier and save them money.

As part of our team, you will be helping us create an entirely new network for the world's money.

For everyone, everywhere.

More about our mission and what we offer.

About the role:

Enter: our Data Lakehouse Platform team!

For our customers, using Wise is as simple as sending money from A to B. Yet behind our app and website is a complex engine of currencies, routes, products and features, generating terabytes of data each day.

The Data Products and Insights squad is at the core of systems that store, process, and leverage data, machine learning models, and generative AI capabilities. Ultimately, this provides insights and innovative ML and AI driven solutions that serve as key drivers for business growth.

Your mission will be to lead the teams building and maintaining a platform that enables everyone at Wise to leverage petabyte-scale data to power our product and to enable timely, intelligent decisions for our teams.

You will guide the sustainable growth of this critical function, lead other engineering leads, senior engineers and have the opportunity to shape multiple teams across our analytics platform.

Your input will directly affect how Wise builds and scales large-scale data and analytical capabilities across the company, enabling teams to move with speed and confidence while maintaining reliability, security and operational excellence.

How we work:

We operate with a belief in automation, programmatic implementation, and reusable design. We’re looking for people who can step back and think holistically about the ecosystem, but also follow through and help implement the design; drawing on the resources across the rest of the Platform Tribe.

As we grow, it is imperative to protect our customers’ money and navigate complex regulatory requirements world-wide. You will have a focus on running and maintaining services and libraries, making sure we have the right observability and service management elements in place, with an eye for high-availability, assessing and reducing engineering load and devising more effective ways for the team to look after its cloud-based platform.

We need to sustain this growth by continuously iterating on the services we run, with a focus on availability, security, and ease of use. We’re looking for an engineer with relevant experience who can understand and respond to complex requirements and deliver simple solutions to help our teams achieve our mission with speed and confidence.

What will you be working on?:

You are an experienced leader, confident in problem-solving and guiding engineering teams through the complexities of project delivery using both agile and traditional methodologies. You have experience growing more junior leaders and staff+ engineers.

Great communication skills and the ability to build consensus - you’re comfortable making a case for what you believe we should be doing.

Experience being a self-starter, self-motivated and collaborative.

The mindset to solve problems from scratch.

Comfortable taking ownership of vendor negotiations and explaining costs to the business.

Willingness to give and take regular feedback - regular feedback is part of our culture.

What do you need?:

We are fully aware that it is uncommon for a candidate to have all skills required and we fully support everyone in learning new skills with us. We value potential and enthusiasm as much as existing expertise. So if you have some of those listed below and are eager to learn more we do want to hear from you!

You have a solid engineering background with years of experience putting solutions into production and maintaining them.

You have the ability to take initiative while working collaboratively. You identify problems, empathise with and build for stakeholders and collaborators across the business, create plans, and see these through to delivery.

You are a great communicator with the ability to clearly relay your plans back to the team, mentor and seek out feedback for yourself. You can adjust your communication to the audience, from internal users up to company senior leadership, Compliance, Security, and Privacy teams.

You are a security and privacy advocate, understanding concepts such as principle of least privilege, and are able to apply security principles at infrastructure and application level.

You have high coding standards - understanding of test coverage best practices & the test pyramid concept, and you are well versed in writing effective, scalable and clean code.

You have experience deploying microservices to cloud based systems.

You have experience designing and implementing distributed and concurrent systems, knowing the tradeoffs between stateful/stateless and synchronous/asynchronous architectures.

You have experience working with product teams helping to build out their ideas in production.

You stay on top of the latest developments and trends in the industry.

The customer is at the heart of everything you do and this empathy drives the decisions you make.

Nice to Have:

Passionate about technology and its relationship with product and user experience.

Experience with platform infrastructure such as on AWS or other cloud ecosystems.

Experience with Docker and Kubernetes and running containerized workloads.

Knowledge of, or experience with data warehousing, data processing infrastructure, and BI tooling.

Knowledge of, or interest in payment platforms and foreign exchange..
