Overview
Skydio is an American drone company founded in 2014 by MIT engineers who had worked on Google's Project Wing, and it built its reputation on autonomous flight rather than on airframes. Its aircraft navigate and avoid obstacles using onboard computer vision without relying on satellite positioning or a skilled pilot, which is what allows an untrained operator to inspect a bridge or clear a building. Headquartered in San Mateo, it exited the consumer market in 2023 to concentrate entirely on public safety, defence and infrastructure inspection, where it is the largest American drone manufacturer.
