WGL - Sr. Corporate Accountant Non-Utility

Job Description

Position Summary

Record and analyze transactions for financial reporting purposes in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Assist the Corporate Accounting Manager in integrating new financial transactions by implementing new processes and procedures and assist with establishing new general ledger infrastructure. Maintain general ledger accounts through account reconciliation and analytical procedures, perform process improvements and assist with researching new transactions for accounting impact.

Tasks and Responsibilities

• Performs day-to-day accounting functions for the various non-utility business activities of AltaGas Ltd in the power and/or gas segments.
• Support and participate in the monthly financial statement close process, ensuring that all financial transactions are recorded accurately and timely as well as analyzing and reviewing financial statements and variances. ‘
• Assists in the development of workflow, systems and processes improvements.
• Understands operations contracts such as Power Purchase, O&M, purchase and sale and EPC agreements related to new and ongoing business transactions to ensure the proper accounting for each transaction based on entity structure including sale leaseback, complex flip structures, joint ventures and other equity financing.
• Participates in monthly due diligence meetings by interpreting and explaining variances from period to period, period to budget and period to forecast to report the company’s financial results
• Assists in the monthly closing process for the Non-Utility reporting entities including ownership and consolidation of entities related to the Power and Gas segments including performing due diligence and other analysis on partially owned investment entities.
• Assists in the stand-alone audits for affiliated entities and prepares the consolidated financial statements and appropriate disclosures.
• Assists in assessing the Hypothetical Liquidation at Book Value (HLBV) equity method of accounting and other alternative accounting methods for investments.
• Work closely with the business to record and analyze power & gas revenue and cost accounts, including renewable energy credits.
• Prepares deliverables for Financial Statement Review meetings, monthly and quarterly Due Diligence meetings and consolidated external financial reporting.
• Reviews customer account receivables for complete bad debt reserve analysis as well as perform monthly reconciliations between the AR sub-ledger to the general ledger.
• Leads in preparing complex elimination and consolidation entries for balance sheet and income statement accounts.
• Ensures compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, and any remedial actions as necessary.
• Assists in setting up and managing the Non-Utility assets through the PowerPlant asset system to track and depreciate all capitalized assets various non-utility entities as well as assist with the ARO process and interest capitalization.
• Maintains strong communication with the operational team. Interprets findings to report impact on the balance sheet and income statement accounts and communicates with the rest of the team.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related business discipline is required
• 5+ Years of related business experience
• Demonstrated technical knowledge and understanding accounting theory, principles, practices, and regulations including GAAP/FASB and SOX compliance and SEC regulations and filing requirements;
• Demonstrated successful use of technology to improve process efficiency
• Willing to learn new systems and processes necessary for strong job performance
• Ability to utilize appropriate operating systems and software applications to access data and generate reports to include: Windows, Microsoft Office including Advanced Excel, and Access. Ability to analyze and interpret data and to identify relevant issues in solving business problems
• Ability to meet numerous internal and external deadlines often under tight time constraints
• Ability to write and present diverse ideas in a logical and concise manner
• Ability to establish rapport and effective working relationships with business partners, supervisors, and peers
• High degree of accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-paced work environment

Preferred:

• CPA or MBA with a concentration in Accounting
• Public accounting experience working with public clients
• Utility/Energy industry experience
• Working knowledge of PeopleSoft Financial modules (e.g. General Ledger, Fixed Assets, Projects) including Power Plant

We offer a competitive salary range of $95,400 to $138,075 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
