Job Description

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.

Accountabilities

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

Assistant Vice President Expectations

  • To advise and influence decision making, contribute to policy development and take responsibility for operational effectiveness. Collaborate closely with other functions/ business divisions.
  • Lead a team performing complex tasks, using well developed professional knowledge and skills to deliver on work that impacts the whole business function. Set objectives and coach employees in pursuit of those objectives, appraisal of performance relative to objectives and determination of reward outcomes

  • Consult on complex issues; providing advice to People Leaders to support the resolution of escalated issues.
  • Identify ways to mitigate risk and developing new policies/procedures in support of the control and governance agenda.
  • Take ownership for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work done.
  • Perform work that is closely related to that of other areas, which requires understanding of how areas coordinate and contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the organisation sub-function.
  • Collaborate with other areas of work, for business aligned support areas to keep up to speed with business activity and the business strategy.
  • Engage in complex analysis of data from multiple sources of information, internal and external sources such as procedures and practises (in other areas, teams, companies, etc).to solve problems creatively and effectively.

We are looking for an experienced Java Engineer to join the Core Engineering Team responsible for building and supporting secure proxy applications and shared platform capabilities.

The role requires strong hands-on software engineering expertise, an ownership mindset, and the ability to independently design,

develop, troubleshoot, and enhance enterprise-grade applications.

The successful candidate will contribute to mission-critical services, drive engineering excellence, embrace modern development practices, and leverage Artificial Intelligence-assisted engineering capabilities to improve productivity and delivery outcomes. The role also requires active collaboration, mentoring, and continuous learning to help raise the overall capability of the engineering team.

To be successful as a Java Engineer, you should have experience with:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain secure, scalable, and resilient Java-based applications and services.
  • Build and enhance Representational State Transfer APIs and microservices using Spring Boot and related frameworks.
  • Support and troubleshoot complex production incidents through effective debugging and root cause analysis.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and platform teams to deliver secure and reliable solutions.
  • Participate in code reviews and promote engineering best practices across the team.
  • Contribute to continuous integration, continuous deployment, and platform modernization initiatives.
  • Champion secure coding practices, automated testing, operational excellence, and production readiness.
  • Support fellow engineers through knowledge sharing, mentoring, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Continuously upskill on emerging technologies, engineering trends, and Artificial Intelligence-assisted software development practices.

Essential Skills

  • Strong hands-on experience developing enterprise applications using Java and Spring Boot frameworks.
  • Proven expertise in building and consuming Representational State Transfer APIs and microservices.
  • Experience implementing automated testing solutions using Karate Testing Framework and unit testing frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of Spring Cloud Config and enterprise configuration management practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform advanced debugging, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis in distributed systems.
  • Experience working with distributed version control and collaborative software development practices.
  • Strong understanding of secure coding standards, software engineering principles, and application resiliency.
  • Ability to work independently with a high level of ownership, rigor, accountability, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a proven track record of supporting and mentoring team members.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Experience deploying and supporting applications on OpenShift Container Platform.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes orchestration and containerized application architecture.
  • Experience implementing GitLab Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment pipelines.
  • Exposure to Harness deployment automation and release management tooling.
  • Knowledge of API gateway technologies, traffic management, secure proxy patterns, and gateway reliability concerns.
  • Experience using Artificial Intelligence Code Assistant tools, including Copilot, GitLab Duo, Claude, and similar platforms, to improve development productivity, code quality, testing, troubleshooting, and engineering efficiency.
  • Demonstrates a mindset of continuous learning and technology upskilling.
  • Actively leverages Artificial Intelligence Code Assistant tools to enhance software development, testing, debugging, and overall engineering productivity.
  • Takes ownership of outcomes and drives issues to resolution with minimal supervision.
  • Builds strong relationships across teams and promotes a collaborative engineering culture.
  • Shares knowledge openly and contributes positively to the growth of the wider engineering community.
