MITRE is an American not for profit corporation that operates federally funded research and development centres for United States government agencies. Its artificial intelligence work spans model assurance, adversarial machine learning and the widely used ATLAS knowledge base of attacks against machine learning systems. The organisation advises defence, aviation, health and cybersecurity agencies and deliberately holds no commercial products of its own; its centres also maintain the ATT&CK framework that security teams everywhere rely on.
At MITRE, your passion fuels work that impacts our nation and improves lives. This is where your skills strengthen national security, cybersecurity, health, transportation, and citizen services. We’re a nonprofit engineering, applied research, and advanced technology organization working in the public interest. With objectivity and integrity at our core, we lead federally funded research and development centers for U.S. government agencies - collaborating with industry and academia to deliver integrated, high-impact solutions that advance our nation’s health, security, and prosperity. Our people tackle the toughest technical challenges, supported by competitive benefits, meaningful career development, and a culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence. Choose MITRE for a career with purpose - and help shape the future.

Department Summary:

This is an opportunity for a Statistical Modeling & Simulation Analyst to join MITRE’s Operations Analysis department. We are a large group of over 60 technical professionals, including over 20 PhDs, who provide thought leadership on a variety of strategic and technical issues, perform analysis that enable our sponsors to make more effective decisions, lead internal research and development activities to bring new technical capabilities into the public sector, and serve as trusted third-party advisors to government sponsors on a variety of technical topics.

In short, we apply our problem-solving skills to complex interdisciplinary problems that occur within or at the intersection of organizations, operations, and technology. We support sponsor projects across the defense and public sectors including military logistics, radio-spectrum frequency management, health care delivery, cybersecurity analytics, fraud detection, satellite planning, homeland security and civilian aviation. We apply advanced analytic techniques such as longitudinal analysis, large-scale integer programming, metaheuristics, agent-based modeling, reinforcement learning, predictive modeling, mathematical modeling, forecasting, machine learning, optimization, statistics, probability modeling, Bayesian analysis, and different types of simulation to solve the nation’s toughest problems. And our research pushes the boundaries on topics such as complex scheduling, medical image analysis, aviation, and human-machine teaming.

If you are passionate about project-based analytical work in the public interest, you have found the right place.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Apply advanced analytical and mathematical techniques to make difficult policy and acquisition decisions, to maximize operational effectiveness and efficiency, and achieve highest quality engineering solutions.
  • Lead and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (statisticians, analysts, subject matter experts, operators) to set priorities, outline gaps / limitations / assumptions, review technical work, resolve difficult research issues, and ensure results are accurate, validated, and aligned with mission needs and security requirements.
  • Represent MITRE in technical discussions with NHTSA, automakers, and other stakeholders, including resolving conflicting requirements.
  • Lead development of roadway safety related research proposals including identifying hypotheses, data requirements, analytic methodologies (leveraging state-of-the-art statistical approaches), and defined outputs.
  • Provide technical oversight for analysis approaches, novel and AI supported research, data linkage, vehicle-data standardization, de-identification, and quality control.
  • Support definition of data-quality and governance procedures, approve datasets for use, and manage exceptions and risks.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Advanced degree in statistics, data analytics, applied mathematics, operations research, or related field with a strong foundation in probability, statistical inference, hypothesis testing, regression analysis, experimental design, optimization, advanced statistical modeling, machine learning, and deep learning/artificial intelligence, and predictive modeling techniques.
  • Experience with automotive and crash safety data analyses and datasets such as FARS, CRSS, and CISS
  • Experience with automotive vehicle data and safety systems such as warranty or build data and advanced driver assistance systems
  • Experience working with and modeling vehicle telematics data
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Strong Python skills including experience with data manipulation, advanced statistical analysis, algorithm development, and software engineering best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to work across multidisciplinary teams, manage multiple analytic efforts, and independently drive work from problem definition through decision support.
  • Demonstrated expertise in translating ambiguous business or mission requirements into analytical approaches, selecting appropriate methodologies, validating results, and developing innovative, scalable, and actionable solutions
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret U.S Government issued Security Clearance. Per the U.S. Government’s eligibility requirements, you must be a U.S Citizen to be considered for a security clearance.
  • This position requires a minimum of 3 days per week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Applied Mathematics/Statistics, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Data Science/Analytics, or equivalent knowledge and skills in a related field
  • Strong data engineering background with experience optimizing data pipelines for ETL
  • Experience working directly with NHTSA, automakers, transportation-safety organizations, or government-industry partnerships
  • Familiarity with de-identification, secure data sharing, and controlled research environments
  • Knowledge of and experience with automated driving system data and systems
  • Experience leading data science initiatives, mentoring junior team members, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, engaging stakeholders, and ensuring solutions adhere to organizational standards for data quality, security, privacy, responsible AI, and reproducibility
  • Ability to develop dashboards, visualizations, and analytical reports using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Matplotlib, or Plotly, and effectively communicate complex technical findings to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to use at least one optimization package (e.g., Gurobi, CPLEX, PuLP, AMPL)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in R and/or SQL
  • Demonstrated ability to use at least one simulation platform (e.g., Stella, Simio, Arena, AnyLogic, SimPy, RSimmer)
